The Helene DiStefano Fund was established in July, 2001 by Dr. Deborah DiStefano, a distinquished ophthalmologist in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to honor the memory of her mother Helene DiStefano who died in May of 2000. Helene DiStefano was a loving mother and grandmother who dedicated her life to creating a loving and nurturing environment for her children and grandchildren. She believed children should be surrounded by love and laughter and that particular care should be given to children who are forced to endure especially difficult circumstances growing up.

Families are devastated by Breast Cancer. Many moms must quit their jobs due to this illness. In addition to the loss of the mother’s income, family finances may be jeopardized again when the father has to take a leave of absence to care for the mom and the children. These financially devastating results are an added blow to what is an already extremely stressful time for the families, especially for her children.

This puts these families in an extreme financial crisis which often leads to inadequate funds for mortgages, food and clothing - i.e. the basic necessities of life. This could force the mom to continue to work despite her need to recuperate and fully heal. She also needs quality time to continue to nurture her children. What better way to heal than to be with family and continue the nurturing of her children.
